Solomon Nelson journal, 1862-1863.

The journal chronicles Nelson's experiences in the United States Army during the Civil War, giving detailed descriptions of the sights, scenery, and events beginning with his stay in New York, subsequent sea voyage by steamer to Louisiana, and return trip north by way of the Mississippi River. Entries reflect camp life, movement of troops, scarcity of food, interaction with African Americans, and his personal reflections on the war. Journal entries give an account of the march to Port Hudson, with comments on the theft of livestock and the fighting, siege, and surrender at Port Hudson. Nelson relates his first impressions of Port Hudson upon seeing the destruction, lack of ammunition, and poor health of Confederate soldiers. The journal includes references to disgruntled Union soldiers, insubordination,and General Banks' response to the soldiers' desire to leave service. Later entries detail Nelson's journey north traveling by steam boat up the Mississippi River from Louisiana to Massachusetts, with descriptions of towns, landscapes, buildings, and civilians along the way. A separate entry on four loose pages includes an anecdote on General Banks at a dinner.
